09 Dec 4 DOUGHNUT SHOPS YOU MUST VISIT IN NEW YORK CITY

In order of personal preference I have put together a list of the best doughnut shops in NYC.

1.  Doughnut Plant

Established in 1994, they make Doughnuts by hand using the highest quality all natural ingredients. They also make all of the jams and fillings and they never use eggs, preservatives, or anything artificial and their doughnuts contain no trans-fat. They have several locations around NYC including specialty coffee shop locations. Check their website for the full list.

Why are they so special? They invented the jelly-filled square doughnut and made the world’s first crème brulee doughnut.

Must try doughnut? Get in early for the Crème brulee doughnut. It’s their best seller and it’s my all-time favourite doughnut. Other than that try the square filled doughnut and the Blackout chocolate cake doughnut.

2.  The Doughnut Project

They make small-batch hand crafted doughnuts. Only 2 years young they have quickly developed a reputation for making the most creative doughnuts. They currently have only one store in NYC located in the West Village.

Why are they so special? They created the ‘Everything doughnut’. It’s the Doughnut version of one of NYC’s best known bagels. Their Beetroot & ricotta doughnut won People’s Choice at this year’s DonutFest in Williamsburg, NY.

Must try doughnut? You can’t miss the “Classic” Bacon maple bar doughnut. It’s the perfect combination of salty and sweet and it’s the best maple bacon doughnut I’ve ever tried. It could almost pass as a breakfast dish with a savoury combination of maple glaze and a fresh strip of bacon.

3.  Dough

Handmade Doughnuts made in small batches throughout the day so the doughnuts are always fresh. Dough believes that buying a doughnut is an experience not just a product so when you visit their stores you can see how the doughnuts are made. Signature flavours are inspired by Latin American culture each with a distinct and colourful personality of their own. They have several locations around NYC including their original store in Brooklyn. Check their website for details.

Why are they so special? The Doughnuts are large in size. Doughnuts are made with brioche-like dough with high quality ingredients including European butter and fresh nutmeg in every single batch.

Must try doughnut? The Hibiscus yeast doughnut is pretty and delicious. It has a sweet tangy glaze made with dried Mexican hibiscus, topped with candied hibiscus flower. The Café au Lait doughnut is also delicious. It’s inspired by a classic coffee cake made with a roasted coffee glaze and crunchy pecan topping.

 4.  Dun-well Doughnuts

These artisanal all-vegan Doughnuts are handcrafted daily with organic ingredients. Both innovative and ethical in their doughnut making process they are committed to sourcing high quality local ingredients that are free of animal or animal derived ingredients. They currently have 2 locations, one in East Williamsburg and one in the East village in Manhattan.

Why are they so special? It’s NYC’s first all-vegan doughnut shop. Voted “Best Doughnuts in NYC” by NY Daily news, you don’t need to be vegan to enjoy these doughnuts.

Must try doughnut? Their famous peanut butter and jelly…wowsers!!
